Estar em contacto com a natureza ajuda David Attenborough a desligar do mundo e fá-lo sentir-se melhor. Acrescenta o naturalista britânico que observar borboletas no seu jardim, o faz esquecer as "desgraças do Brexit".
O conhecido defensor do ambiente e apresentador de televisão de séries sobre a vida selvagem, é um dos grandes apoiantes da Grande Contagem de Borboletas que está a decorrer desde 20 Julho 2018, no Reino Unido e se prolonga até 12 Agosto 2018.

O especialista em vida selvagem, de 92 anos, é presidente da organização Butterfly Conservation (Conservação das Borboletas), que lançou a iniciativa Big Butterfly Count, que incentiva as pessoas de todo o país a observarem 17 espécies de borboletas e a registarem os avistamentos online durante as próximas três semanas.

Objectivo?
Conduzir um estudo anual sobre a conservação destes animais e o estado do ambiente.
Entre as várias espécies de borboletas, eis algumas a identificar: a borboleta-azul-do-azevinho (Celastrina argiolus), a borboleta-limão (Gonepteryx rhamni), a bela-dama (Vanessa cardui), ou a almirante-vermelho (Vanessa atalanta).

Butterfly Conservation
Nos últimos 40 anos, mais de três quartos das borboletas do Reino Unido viram as suas populações diminuírem. Este ano, as condições meteorológicas da região poderão ser favoráveis ao desenvolvimento destes animais, com um Inverno frio seguido de um clima estável no final da Primavera e início do Verão.
Porém, caso as temperaturas elevadas provoquem um período de seca durante o Verão, isso poderá ser “catastrófico” para a conservação das borboletas, tal como aconteceu em 1976. Isto porque as plantas murcham e os insectos, mais concretamente as lagartas (das quais nascem as borboletas através de um processo de metamorfose), acabam por morrer por falta de alimento, explica a organização Butterfly Conservation.

Spending time with nature offers "precious breathing space" from modern life, Sir David Attenborough said, as he called on the public to join the world's biggest butterfly count.
The naturalist said watching butterflies in his garden takes his mind off "the woes of Brexit".

The exercise involves spending 15 minutes counting butterflies and submitting the sightings online.

Butterfly Conservation
The majority of butterfly species have been in decline for the past 40 years.
The big butterfly count is a nationwide survey UK aimed at helping us assess the health of our environment. It was launched in 2010 and has rapidly become the world's biggest survey of butterflies.
Over 60,000 people took part in 2017, submitting 62,500 counts of butterflies and day-flying moths from across the UK (see all the 2017 results).

However, this year, weather in the UK - a cold winter followed by settled weather during a late spring and summer - have created the right conditions for butterflies to flourish.
Species expected to do particularly well include the holly blue and red admiral.
But if the hot conditions create a drought, the results could be "catastrophic" as plants wither and insects die through lack of food, said the charity Butterfly Conservation, which organises the count.
This happened in 1976 when the butterfly population collapsed after the hot summer.

You can submit separate records for different dates at the same place, and for different places that you visit. Remember that your count is useful even if you do not see any butterflies or moths.

Interesting! In the school year 2005-2006, I developed a cross-curricular project In Portuguese language curriculum with my students 6th year that was very successful: Butterflies count at Serralves Park.
Teachers can read how the cross-curricular project 6th year, Portuguese Language curriculum - studying Poetry. The cross-curricular has been developed in Portuguese Language, Civics & Environment, Design and Sciences school curricular
