O Eucalipto de Contige, no concelho de Sátão, venceu a 6ª Edição Nacional da Árvore do Ano, e vai representar Portugal no Concurso Internacional deste ano.

A edição portuguesa é promovida pela União da Floresta Mediterrânica (UNAC) desde 2018 e tem como objectivo "destacar a importância das árvores antigas na herança cultural e natural".
Apesar da curta história da iniciativa no nosso país, uma árvore nacional já conta com a distinção máxima a nível europeu. Logo no primeiro ano da participação de Portugal, o Sobreiro "assobiador de Águas de Moura, em Palmela, foi eleito como a Árvore Europeia de 2018 (ver no nosso blog)

Depois das edições anteriores premiarem exemplares notáveis de espécies autóctones ou ornamentais, este ano o público elegeu o Eucalipto de Contige, localizado na freguesia e concelho de Satão, com 3 046 votos, numa das votações mais renhidas de sempre entre os 3 primeiros lugares.
Considerada pela Universidade de Aveiro (UA) “a maior árvore classificada de Portugal”, a sua plantação remonta a 1878, quando se abriu a Estrada das Donárias. Este exemplar com aproximadamente 140 anos manteve-se, apesar de todas as intervenções urbanísticas e rodoviárias na sua envolvente.
Há alusões de propriedade a famílias do concelho, Garcia de Mascarenhas, de Rio de Moinhos e Xavier do Amaral Carvalho, famílias que no séc. XIX se uniram em casamento e eram vizinhas. A monumentalidade da árvore obrigou à sua manutenção, fazendo com que o perfil da estrada lhe faça a devida “vénia”.
Este eucalipto está classificado como de interesse público desde Agosto de 1964, onde pelas suas dimensões, já era uma árvore notável.

Ao pódio sobem também, em segundo lugar, a Azinheira de Alportel (São Brás de Alportel, Faro) com 2.879 votos.

O Eucalipto de Contige irá representar Portugal no Concurso Europeu Tree of the Year 2023 no próximo mês de Fevereiro.

Here we are again to wish you a Happy New Year ! The Lunar New Year of 2023, also known as the Year of the Water Rabbit, will begin on January 22 and last until February 9, 2024, when we enter the Year of the Dragon.
The European Tree of the Year contest originated in 2011. The purpose of the European Tree of the Year is to highlight the significance of old trees in the natural and cultural heritage that deserves our care and protection. Unlike other contests, the European Tree of the Year doesn't focus on beauty, size or age but rather on the tree's story and its connection to people.
Portugal is participating on the European Tree Year 2023 with the Eucalyptus Globulus Labill de Contige, in the municipality of Sátão, Viseu won the 6th National Tree Contest of the Year, and will represent Portugal in this year's International Competition. Voting ran until 5 January 2023. There were 10 trees that you can admire here
The Eucalyptus was considered by the University of Aveiro (UA) “the largest classified tree in Portugal”, It was planted around 1878. This approximately 140-year-old specimen has remained despite all the urban and road interventions in its surroundings.
The monumentality of the tree forced its maintenance, making the profile of the road give it the due “bow”.

The ceremony of the European National Tree took place the 23 March 2023 at the European Parliament!
And the winner of European Tree 2023 is the Oak Fabrykant from Łódź. Poland. It has won the 2023 competition Tree of the Year with 5 559 votes over the internet for the tree.
