A acção do homem está a por em perigo as populações de preguiças na América.
Crescente número de pessoas na América Central e do Sul têm roubado do seu habitat estes mamíferos. O o ar simpático com que os animais se deslocam é ao mesmo tempo motivo de atracção e uma ameaça.
Na Costa Rica, um abrigo acolhe vários espécimens que chegam feridos cada vez mais, devido a interferência humana.
As histórias multiplicam-se. Leslie Howle, co-fundadora de Toucan Rescue Ranch conhece-as tão bem quanto as preguiças que alberga.
É o caso de uma cria que "foi puxada com força pelas pernas por pessoas que queriam separá-la da mãe e levá-la como animal de estimação. Partiram-lhe os músculos da anca. Sofreu muito, de tal forma que não se conseguia mover.

Aos poucos, voluntários vão educando as preguiças a reproduzir pequenos gestos que seriam normais na natureza. Um percurso em que uma boa companhia é muito importante.
"Aqui são desparasitadas e reabilitadas até estarem melhor de saúde. Depois, são colocadas num grupo com mais jovens, para que se familiarizem com outros espécimens que vão ser libertados, e para que não estejam sozinhos",

No final, o objectivo é sempre o mesmo. Devolver as preguiças à casa de onde nunca deveriam ter saído. A floresta.

O Dia Internacional do Animal Preguiça, ou simplesmente Dia Internacional da Preguiça, celebra-se anualmente no terceiro sábado de Outubro, para fazer uma pausa neste comprido mês.
Não é uma data oficial. Existem dois objetivos para esta data: aprender a viver mais lentamente, e melhor, tendo como exemplo a preguiça e chamar a atenção para os problemas que este animal enfrenta.
Apesar de estar sempre com uma expressão de alegria no rosto, a preguiça é vítima de caçadores, é vendida como animal de estimação, morta por carros, por cabos elétricos, entre outros perigos.
Perigos que nesta publicação já foram desenvolvidos e que continuam a persistir.
O primeiro Dia Internacional do bicho-Preguiça celebrou-se em 2010, na Colômbia, por acção da AIUNAU, uma organização sem fins lucrativos de protecção animal, tendo obtido relevo mundial ao longo dos anos.

Man's action is endangering the sloth populations in South America and Central America.
A great number of people in Central and South America have stolen these mammals from their habitat. Their friendly air and the way they move are a source of attraction and a threat.
The stories multiply. Leslie Howle, co-founder of Toucan Rescue Ranch knows them as well as her sloths.
This is the case of a baby sloth that "was pulled hard by its legs by people who wanted to separate it from the mother and take it as a pet. The hip muscles were broken. She suffered so much that she could not to move.
Volunteers gradually educate sloths to relearn small gestures that would be normal in nature. A path in which a good company is very important.

In the end, the goal is always the same. Return the sloths to the house they should never have left, the forest.
But, do you know that slots have a International Day? The International Sloth Day is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of October, to take a break from this long month.
It is not an official date. There are two goals for this date: to learn to live slower and better, taking as an example laziness and to draw attention to the problems that this animal faces.
