On January 11, Google celebrates with a Doodle the 100th anniversary of Russia pioneering system of protecting natural areas with Nature Reserves and National Parks Day

As Google did on September 13, 2016 with a Doodle celebrating the Parks and monuments of the U.S. National Parks on the occasion of the National Parks Service centennial

Google Doodle is rendered in a woodblock style reminiscent of Russian postage stamps issued for Barguzin’s half-centennial, and inspired by six specially protected natural areas: Barguzin Nature Reserve, Ergaki National Park (aka Yergaki), Russian Arctic National Park, Lake Baikal (frozen), Kronotsky Nature Reserve, and Dalnevostochny Morskoy Nature Reserve (Far East Marine Nature Reserve).

Russia’s tumultuous history includes one legacy little known outside its borders, a vast system of protected lands that conservationists have fought for decades to study and protect. Some are so remote and guarded that few of Russia’s own citizens have ever stepped foot in them.

2017 will mark their 100th anniversary. To commemorate the anniversary, Russian president Vladimir Putin has officially decreed 2017 to be the Year of Ecology and Protected Areas.

Today, the country’s stewardship of its wild landscapes continues to gain ground, with over 13,000 specially protected natural areas occupying millions of acres, about 11.4 percent of Russia’s vast territory.

Ranging from tiny to titanic, they include 103 reserves, 49 national parks, and 68 national nature sanctuaries, with initiatives underway to expand old areas and develop new protected territories.

While the U.S. saw parks as “pleasuring grounds” for recreation-seekers, turn of the century Russian conservationists like Grigory Kozhevnikov had been calling for the opposite:the protection of Russia’s natural wealth from its own people.

“No need to remove anything, to add anything, to improve anything,” Kozhevnikov wrote. “Nature must be left alone, and we may observe the result.”

Since 1978, more than thirty of Russia's nature reserves have been designated by UNESCO as biosphere reserves.
